July 2012 Volume XLVIII Number 4

Sponsored by Preventech

Dr. Barrett W.R. Peters, a resident in the pediatric dentistry program at Virginia Commonwealth University has been selected as the Samuel Harris Health Research and Policy Fellow for 2013. In combination with his pediatric dentistry residency, Peters is pursuing a Master of Science in Dentistry at VCU.

Peters will be using his fellowship year to work on projects advancing the AAPD research goals as defined by the Council on Scientific Affairs and the Pediatric Oral Health Research and Policy Center Advisory Board. He has a strong interest in health policy. He will be able to use experience gained through participation in organized dentistry and numerous lobbying efforts. Peters’ understanding of how research helps form policy within professional organizations will be particularly useful.

The AAPD acknowledges Drs. Tegwyn Brickhouse and Patrice Wunsch of VCU for their support and mentorship of Peters as he completes his Harris Fellowship project. Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children: the Foundation of the AAPD and AAPD past president, Dr. Paul S. Casamassimo created the Samuel Harris Health Policy fellow to provide an opportunity for residents and new graduates to participate in governance and advocacy activities.
