HSHC Dental Home Day

September 2012 Volume XLVIII Number 5

Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children is recruiting volunteers to help with its inaugural HSHC Dental Home Day on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, before the official start of the AAPD Annual Session in Orlando. Dental Home Day will be a great way for AAPD members to give back to Orlando by:

Providing dental care to at least 100 local underserved children,

Providing oral health instruction and parent/caregiver instruction to all participants, and

Raising local awareness of the importance of child oral health.

The Foundation is looking for at least 50 volunteers to assist with patient intake and triage, oral health instruction, escorting patients, prophylaxis, treatment, and post-treatment care. Local regulations will limit hands-on treatment to Florida-licensed dentists, but there will be plenty of work to keep all of our volunteers busy for the day. Volunteers can be AAPD members and their professional staff.

Volunteers will receive transportation to and from the clinic, Dental Home Day smocks and scrubs, an invitation for two to the HSHC Donor Recognition Gala, and the great feeling that comes with giving back.

"Dental Home Day is a logical extension of our access to care work," said Dr. Beverly Largent, chair of HSHCs Grants and Programs Committee. "Besides providing a great outlet for our members to help when theyre in Orlando, the Foundation also will give the participating clinic an Access to Care Grant that will help provide patients a dental home for the coming year."

A local Orlando clinic will be selected this fall as the Dental Home Day site. At press time, the Foundation was awaiting applications from clinics responding to HSHCs request for proposal. The selected nonprofit clinic will receive grants totaling up to $35,000, plus the publicity generated by Dental Home Day outreach.

The Foundation also is securing sponsorship for Dental Home Day. Proceeds from the community service event will support HSHC Access to Care initiatives nationwide.

AAPD members interested in volunteering can sign up online through the Foundations website at http://www.meet ingproceedings.com/HSHC2013ServiceDay. htm. Volunteers will receive automatic registration confirmation upon signing up. Final volunteer selection for Dental Home Day will depend on local needs, clinic hours, and the number of members registering to volunteer. Formal invitations will be sent by Jan. 31, 2013.
