As members of the dental community, we are well aware that dental caries remains the most common chronic childhood disease. With Americas rising healthcare costs, its essential that we do all we can to prevent or reduce the incidence of tooth decay, a preventable disease. With so much in the scientific literature about the oral systemic connection to overall health, it makes logical sense to begin by protecting and improving the oral health of Americas children.

Thats why Preventech is proud to partner with the AAPD by sponsoring the Samuel D. Harris Research and Policy Fellowship. The Harris Fellow will serve as the research assistant for a specific research project of the AAPD Pediatric Oral Health Research and Policy Center, whose goals are to conduct research that advances childrens oral health issues in accordance with AAPD policies and guidelines. This years Samuel D. Harris Preventech fellow is Barrett W. R. Peters, D.D.S., resident at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University. Barrett follows last years winner Jacqueline Hom, D.M.D., Ph.D., student and pediatric dentistry resident, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Historically, the Samuel D. Harris fellow has gone on to contribute to the research capabilities of the AAPD Pediatric Oral Health Research and Policy Center.

When Preventech was founded in 1994 by Al King, our president and CEO, one of our main goals was to design and develop preventive products specifically suited to improve both the comfort and clinical outcomes for your pediatric patients. We believe a positive patient experience during the initial dental practice visit will lead to a lifetime of regular visits to the dentist. Regular preventive care for children and adults is a critical component to prevention and improved oral health and therefore, overall health.

You are probably already using some of our Preventive products in your practice. PIVOT Disposable Prophy Angles feature a shorter profile cup, to allow for improved access in smaller mouths. Pivots ultra soft, "latex-free" cup eliminates latex allergy concerns, reaches deeper into tighter interproximal spaces and splays easier in to the sulcus allowing for a more comfortable patient experience. In 1997, we introduced NEXT Prophy Paste which comes in a variety of child-friendly flavors like vanilla, bubblegum, cherry, watermelon and grape. NEXT fine grit is "pumice-free" and kinder to young tooth surfaces than competitive brands. NEXT fine also feels less gritty and rinses easily. We quickly followed NEXT paste up with NADA pumice paste. NADA has no fluoride, is dye-free and flavorless; is ideal for pit and fissure sealant preps and flavor intolerant patients. You will want to keep a box of NADA on hand for your patients that have allergies.

Perhaps our greatest product innovation, the patented ESA (extended straight attachment) disposable prophy angle, launched in 2000, improves both the ergonomics for the clinician by eliminating the metal nose cone and the economics

of the practice by reducing the infection control burden associated with this costly component. Clean-up between patients is quick and easy leaving more appointment time for important home care oral hygiene instruction.

Recently, Preventech has introduced a family of professional fluoride products uniquely designed to make it easier for clinicians to treat pediatric patients while improving their acceptance and compliance while under your care. VELLA 5 percent Fluoride Varnishs smoother for-

mula applies easier with no lumps, clumps or stringy mess so it feels better in the mouth, encouraging patient compliance. PEDIAGEL Topical fluoride Gel offers patient friendly, colorful packaging and fun flavors for your patients when you apply

1.23 percent APF or 2.0 percent NSF gels utilizing the tray technique. Finally, DAYLI 5,000 ppm NSF Brush-On Gel is an ideal homecare choice for your higher-caries-risk patients.

Weve got more new products on the way and welcome the suggestions and input of our customers on new products that they would like to see commercialized.

We truly appreciate our partnership with AAPD and its members and we look forward to our 10-year commitment as sponsor of the Samuel D. Harris Research and Policy Fellowship Grant.

Together we can make a difference in the oral health of America’s children.
