2013 Joint Academic Day

July 2013 Volume XLVIX Number 4

Nearly 150 educators involved in predoctoral and postdoctoral pediatric dental education came together for the Annual Joint Academic Day. AAPD academic trustee Dr. Catherine Flaitz welcomed everyone and introduced the morning program featuring discussions on strengthening the pediatric dentistry experiences in dental school education and residency programs and the decision to join academic dentistry.

Featured speakers during the morning plenary session were Drs. David Curtis and Catherine Flaitz discussing how fundraising can increase patient experiences; Dr. Amr Moursi moderated a panel addressing the concerns for building a patient pool; Dr. Homa Amini led a group of faculty discussing their reasons for choosing academics over practice and the seasoned practitioner entering the academic workforce; and Dr. Alton McWhorter presented a talk about how Baylor College of Dentistry utilizes residents for didactic instruction. Presentations will be available on the AAPD website.

Following lunch, the Society of Predoctoral Program Directors and the Society of Postdoctoral Program Directors met and held programs designed to meet their specific needs. Dr. Lisa Mruz from the University of Buffalo and Dr. Sharon Freudenberger from Case-Western will serve as co-chairs for the Society of Predoctoral Program Directors for 2013 – 2014 and Dr. Farhad Yeroshalmi of Jacobi Medical Center will continue as chair for the Society of Postdoctoral Program Directors. Together with Flaitz, Mruz, Freudenberger and Yeroshalmi will play a critical role in planning for the 2014 Joint Academic Day in Boston. Sponsored by Proctor & Gamble
