Dental Home Day Brings HSHC Access to Care to Orlando

May 2013 Volume XLVIX Number 3

More than 50 AAPD volunteers will participate in Healthy Smiles, Healthy Childrens inaugural Dental Home Day on Wednesday, May 22, a community service event providing dental care

to at least 100 children from underserved families. Lead sponsor Sunstar Americas, Inc. has committed to sponsoring Dental Home Day for the next three years.

Orange Blossom Family Health Center, on Orlandos southwest side, will be the host agency for the first Dental Home Day. Besides providing care to its child dental patients, the health center also will receive Access to Care Grants totaling $35,000 to supplement ongoing care of Dental Home Day patients for up to one year after the event.

"Were grateful to Orange Blossom Family Health Center for opening its doors to us," said Foundation President David Curtis. "Our access to care efforts are growing and the AAPD Annual Session is a great opportunity for members to see the Foundations mission in action."

Dental Home Day is different from other oral health service events in that establishing a dental home for the participating children is key.

"Sunstar is pleased to have the opportunity to support the dental home emphasis for children," said Aaron Pfarrer, senior director of Surgical and Chemical. "Sunstars mission is based upon enhancing the health and well-being of people everywhere, and funding quality care in the absence of a dental home is a worthy cause. We are excited about the Foundations commitment to ensure assistance for the children after the AAPD convention."

Members are encouraged to stop by the Foundations booth to learn more about future Dental Home Day opportunities. Members also should watch for Dental Home Day news at various events and venues throughout the 2013 Annual Session.

Although a majority of volunteer positions have been filled at press time, members interested participating in dental home day should contact Paul Amundsen, CFRE, director of development and charitable programs, at pamundsen@aapd.org. Volunteer information also is available on the Foundations website at http:// aapd.org/foundation.
