PAC Corner

September 2013 Volume XLIX Number 5

Thanks to all who have supported the AAPD PAC via the voluntary PAC contribution "check-off " on the current 2013-14 dues statement. Your support is critical to our long-term success. You also received a specific appeal from your PAC Steering Committee district representative. I cannot over-emphasize how important the AAPD PAC is to our advocacy efforts. It helps your professional association meet your needs in the public policy arena. Our goal is building relationships with policymakers to promote winning strategies in support of children's oral health. Many critical issues are currently before us, such as:

Influencing implementation of pediatric oral health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

Maintaining Title VII pediatric dentistry training funds in light of federal budget reductions.

Promoting a Dental Home for every child starting with an age one visit.

Supporting market-based Medicaid and CHIP funding as a better approach to improving access than creating dental therapists.

Making sure that Medicaid provider audits follow recognized clinical guidelines of the AAPD.

As the 2014 mid-term Congressional election approaches, the AAPD PAC once again will be looking to our members to not only deliver PAC checks, but to also host fund-raisers in your office or home. This allows us to structure a message focused solely on children's oral health issues, and lets Members of Congress meet the pediatric dentists who are providing the front-line care for children in the local community. The AAPD can provide technical assistance if you wish to set up such an event in your office or home. I can personally attest that having my Congresswoman (Yvette D. Clark, D-9th N.Y.) visit my dental practice was an invaluable experience. I hope that every pediatric dentist can accomplish this with your own Congressman or Congresswoman. This personal connection enhances our ability to be effective advocates for the oral health and well-being of the children we serve.
