Member Benefit Spotlight: Discounted Motion Picture Licensing for AAPD Members

September 2013 Volume XLIX Number 5

As a pediatric dentist, everything about your practice caters to children. From tiny dental instruments to bubble-gum-flavored polishing paste, the little extras found in most practices are enough to make parents wish they were kids again. The stuff of fantasy—an indoor jungle gym in the waiting area or an underwater seascape in an exam room—are now standards as pediatric dentists strive to transform their offices into a child's play land. In the competitive and growing field of pediatric dentistry, pediatric dentists are finding unique ways to enhance the patient experience.

Many pediatric dentists like to create a welcoming environment for young patients with something as simple as a favorite children's film or video. You might show DVDs or stream Netflix as a simple and affordable means of entertainment either in a waiting area or an exam room. Additionally, it is much easier for a young patient to sit still when they are focused on their favorite Disney movie.

However, as video use becomes commonplace in practices across the country, it is important to remember that copyrighted motion pictures and other programs which are available for rental or purchase in any legal format are intended for personal, private use only. Exhibitions within a medical or dental office require a public performance license. Regardless of whether or not an admission fee is charged, this legal requirement applies equally to for and non-profit entities, including private practices.

Last year, the AAPD negotiated an agreement with the Motion Picture licensing Corporation (MPlC) in an effort to educate their members of the need for copyright compliance and provide a discount to AAPD members. As a result, your office may be one of many that have already obtained the MPLC Umbrella License® for the public performance of copyrighted audiovisual works. If you have not yet obtained a license, now is the time to take advantage of the AAPD members discount and ensure copyright compliance at your office! Pricing is just $305 per location, per year. Additional discounts are available when two or more locations are licensed.

As an independent copyright licensing vendor, the MPLC is exclusively authorized by motion picture studios to grant the Umbrella License. The MPLC represents over 425 content providers ranging from kids' Hollywood favorites like Disney and DreamWorks, to educational and family friendly producers. Once licensed, movies and other programs may be obtained from any legitimate source, whether purchased, borrowed, rented, downloaded or streamed.

Creating a kid-friendly environment at your practice is as easy as pressing "play". Just make sure you have the appropriate license before doing so. The AAPD encourages members to comply with federal copyright law through the purchase of an Umbrella License for any video use. The cost of an annual license is much less than the penalties for copyright infringement.

To obtain an Umbrella License, please contact the MPLC directly at (800) 462-8855 or online at http://www.mplc.org and ask for the AAPD member discount. They will guide you through the necessary steps to ensure comprehensive copyright compliance. Additional information about the program is also available on the AAPD website at: http://www.aapd.org/join/benefits/. You may also contact AAPD COO and General Counsel C. Scott Litch at (800) 544-2174 with any additional questions about the need for public performance licensing in your practice
