Applicants Wanted: Leadership Institute Cohort V

November 2015 Volume L Number 6

Identifying and cultivating future leaders is critical to any organization’s long-term vitality and growth.

Thanks to a seed grant of $1 million from Ultradent Products, Inc., the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children (HSHC) have been leading the way in leadership development since 2004 when we established the first-of-its-kind AAPD/HSHC Leadership Institute at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Our fourth Leadership Institute cohort convenes next month for its final round of on-campus work, increasing the number of Leadership Institute graduates to 120 AAPD members.

I am pleased to announce we now are accepting applications for Leadership Institute Cohort V, which will convene in December 2016 at Kellogg on Northwestern’s campus in Evanston, Ill. Every AAPD member should consider applying.

Leadership Institute students receive instruction from Kellogg’s world-class faculty covering topics such as strategy formulation, decision making and risk analysis, negotiation, crisis management, finance, business law, and more. Besides honing critical thinking skills that will have a direct impact on your daily professional life, Leadership Institute will provide you with the tools to make you an even more effective resource to your communities and the broader dental profession.

Kellogg faculty each year tell us how much they enjoy working with our members. They observe that AAPD ?members are effective communicators who engage in ?lively exchanges among Leadership Institute students and Kellogg faculty.

Having observed practically every session of every cohort since Leadership Institute began, I’ve witnessed its transformative impact. Participants have described the experience as life changing and a few even have been inspired to pursue M.B.A.s after completing Leadership Institute.

Early cohorts included participants who were in leadership or already on the Academy’s and Foundation’s leadership tracks. As we’ve progressed through cohorts II, III and IV, each successive group has featured a greater percentage of Academy members on their way up, as it were, getting future leaders involved much earlier than before Leadership Institute was established.

Since 2012, HSHC has been using Leadership Institute participation as one of its criteria for recruiting members of its standing committees. LI grads now play important roles on HSHC’s grant making and fundraising committees; they also serve on the HSHC board of trustees.

LI grads also play an instrumental role in the AAPD/HSHC Advanced Leadership Institute at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Advanced Leadership Institute, which convenes every three to four years at Wharton, harnesses the collective expertise of Leadership Institute grads to focus on issues critical to pediatric dentistry. The first ALI cohort identified and addressed issues related to positioning pediatric dentists as recognized authorities on child oral health.  ALI cohort II, which begins work in January 2016, will be tasked with developing the Academy’s next strategic plan.

As you can see, Leadership Institute training and experiences are put to good use!

But, first things first. This month AAPD and HSHC will begin accepting applications for Leadership Institute Cohort V. While specific dates have not yet been confirmed, cohort V will meet for four days, a Thursday through Sunday, for three consecutive Decembers beginning December 2016. Any AAPD member in good standing is eligible to apply for one of the 30 available spots.

The majority of Leadership Institute’s tuition is underwritten jointly by the Academy and Foundation. Leadership Institute participants will be responsible for approximately one-third of the individual tuition’s cost, which will be less than $6,000 per student. Participants will also be responsible for all travel expense to and from Evanston, Ill.

The application is a simple online process. Applicants will be asked to submit their C.V., two letters of recommendation and a 300-word essay explaining why they should be invited to join cohort V. A selection committee comprised of cohort IV graduates, one representative from each AAPD District, will select the next Leadership Institute cohort.

Applicants will be notified of their status no later than Feb. 29, 2016.

Members with questions about Leadership Institute Cohort V or the application process should contact HSHC Grants and Programs Assistant Kelly Katona at kkatona@aapd.org. Otherwise, visit the Foundation’s website at http://www.aapd.org/foundation for links to the Leadership Institute application page.

Please apply today. I hope to have the opportunity to welcome you to Leadership Institute Cohort V in December 2016!
