AAPD Predoctoral Chapter Spotlight

November 2019 Volume LIV Number 6

University of Missouri-Kansas City Pre-Doctoral AAPD Club

The AAPD Student Club at the University of  Missouri-Kansas City School of  Dentistry, fondly known as the ""PEDO CLUB"" has had a very successful year thus far. Our club works hard to offer events that emphasize education, fundraising events, community service and of  course, fun!

We provide ""Lunch and Learn"" topics that are related to pediatric dentistry with other specialties like endodontics, orthodontics, trauma, etc. Most recently, guest speaker and pediatric dentist Dr Aaron Bumann spoke about treatment planning a pediatric patient. It was interactive and offered great insights for students on how to properly assess, diagnose, treat or refer pediatric patients. This year we are initiating a ""Progressive Dinner Night"" where we plan to visit three private pediatric dentistry practices to learn more about the ins and outs of  a dental office.

We have also sponsored some fundraising events that promote our club and our mission. For example this fall we had a ""Back to School"" shaved ice event with the help from a fellow pedo club member's busi- ness ""Lilo's Shaved Ice"". All proceeds support our activities. This has been a huge success and is quickly becoming a tradition at the school. It kicks off the academic year with a fun treat and helps promote our club as well.

In regards to service activities each year, we are active with the UMKC Give Kids a Smile program sponsored by the dental school. Club members also volunteer their time at Team Smile events throughout  the year and most recently they participated in the first ever ""Pedo Night"" at a non-profit organization called JayDoc Free Clinic. The first Pedo Night was so successful that we have had to turn down patients but have been allowed to have another night this Octo- ber. This gives our students an opportunity to help children who could not afford to seek dental care elsewhere. Dr Eileen Cocjin, our faculty advisor, also takes a club members  to help her with dental screening and dental education events at Sheffield Place, a shelter for women and children suffering from domestic violence.

Our efforts in community service are not limited to dental activi- ties alone. Each year we participate in the Salvation Army's Adopt A Family program during the holiday season. We have Mittens, our snowman, who has mittens for students, faculty and staff to pick up, purchase and bring back specific gift request from families who otherwise will not have any presents for the holidays."

We would like to give special thanks to our faculty advisor, Dr. Eileen Cocjin, who is always there to support our goals, provide avenues of  opportunity, and encourage young aspiring dental professionals.

Our club looks forward to creating more opportunities to give back to the community and to the pediatric population specifically so we can help create smiles - ONE CHILD AT A TIME! ONE SMILE  AT A TIME!
