March 2021 Volume LVI Number 2

A Message from Your President

January 2021 Volume LVI Number 1

Many of us found out that we were stronger than we ever imagined. In 2020, even as we had diverse personal challenges with many losing loved ones, there were also happy moments—marriages and births of new loved ones. We are living through a pandemic but may see the light at the end of tunnel with the distribution of the vaccine. We have had difficult conversations on race and equity which were overdue. We have modified our practices with so many improvements to keep everyone safe. We have struggled through an economic crisis but have managed to keep our offices open. And, we have gotten through all of this—together! If there was ever a theme for 2020 is that we are stronger together. This should carry us through 2021. There is much more that bring us together than divides us. We relied on each other for information, for connection and compas- sion. We persevered. We were resilient. We were hopeful. So, I am optimistic for 2021! I am optimistic that I will see you—my AAPD family—in 2021! While no decision has been made yet on whether a face-to-face annual meeting in Boston will be possible, I am still looking forward to connecting with all you virtually, in person or some sort of hybrid.
As we work through some uncertainty about Boston 2021, I remain excited about the meeting! Many of us will recall how quickly we were able to pivot Nashville 2020 to NashVirtual 2020 and while we missed some of the social functions of the meeting, the platform was amazing and we were able to provide world class CE! In some ways the virtual format brought us closer together. I have no doubt that a virtual platform that allows any of us to connect and attend CE courses, whether or not an in-person meeting is possible, will be part of our future. The AAPD Scientific Program Committee, led by Dr Janice Townsend, has created an outstanding line-up of speakers and topics. To highlight a few sessions, there will be updates on Pediatric Medicine, Mindfulness and Wellness, Sedation and Orthodontics! All in one place. There will still be a diverse course selection for you to choose from, which will certainly satisfy a broad range of interests.
We have learned a lot this year and found news ways to stay connected, beginning with our town hall events that covered reopening your practices, accessing PPE and mental health, to our podcasts covering everything from advocacy to ethics to OR access. I have heard from many of you about how much you have enjoyed the flexibility of the AAPD CE offerings and the flexibility with the AAPD Education Passport.
Through all of this we stayed connected. I have been touched the outpouring of support from our members.
You have been there for us and we are here for you. We are stronger together. Whether I see you in Boston in person or on a virtual stage, please know that the AAPD is committed to stand by you through 2021 and beyond.
